Insurance is a challenging industry, but being an insurance agent is also one of the most rewarding careers you can have. If you’ve been eager to take the next step and launch your career as an insurance agent, here’s how to get started.
Complete a Pre-Licensing Course
To become a licensed insurance agent in Florida, you are required to complete an approved line of pre-licensing education, as well as pass the state licensing exam. There are lots of pre-licensing courses available and many offer flexibility when it comes to when, where, and how you take your classes. Most courses are available in varying formats, from classroom to web class, to online course and self-study.
Once you complete the course, you will need to take an exam. Upon passing the exam you will receive a certificate of completion, which you will need to report to the state of Florida. Your pre-licensing education will be valid for four years from the date you complete the requirements, during which time you will take your exam.
A quick search in your immediate area will return a host of courses, so do some research and find the best option for you.
Take a Licensing Exam
Once you have completed your course material, you need to take and pass a licensing exam. The licensing exam is provided by Pearson VUE and requires a fee, which can be paid by credit card, debit card, voucher, or electronic check.
Reserve Your Exam Spot
You can easily reserve your spot for the exam online at www.pearsonvue.com/fl/insurance — keep in mind, you must reserve your spot a minimum of 24 hours before you wish to take the exam. You can also reserve your spot by phone at 1-888-274-2020.
What to Bring
Be sure to bring two forms of up-to-date signature identification such as your driver’s license and a debit card or passport.
What to Expect
On the day of the exam, arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of the test. Don’t bring any personal items with you into the exam (leave your cell phone and other similar items in your car if possible). Everything you need to complete the exam will be administered.
The exam is multiple-choice format and consists of two sections: a general section and a state section. The passing score for each section is 70 percent. Upon completion of the exam, you will be given a score report marked pass or fail. If you fail the course, you will be given additional retesting information. You can retake the exam up to five times during a 12-month period.
Apply for Your License
After passing the exam, you will need to get fingerprinted. You can find a location, register, and pay for fingerprinting online here or by calling 1-800-528-1358.
After getting fingerprinted, you will apply for your license by completing an application here. It’s important to complete the application process within one year of passing the exam or you will need to retake the exam.
