With over one billion people on Facebook, 300 million on Twitter and 97 million on LinkedIn as of 2015, it is pretty clear social media is definitely not just a temporary trend. If you are an insurance agent and you have not joined any social networks or are a beginner still learning the ropes, it is time to get on board.
It may surprise you to learn that almost half of all web users look toward social media when making a purchase — a huge audience to reach, right at your fingertips. Not sure where to start? Here is a list of tips to help you reach your current and potential policyholders as an insurance agent.
1. Link back to your website, blogs and promotions.
If you want to leverage the advantages social media networks have to offer, you need to make it easy for your clients and future customers to know who you are, how to contact you and what your agency offers. Be sure to have this information in your profile, but also, make sure you share your blog posts and website on a regular basis.
2. Engage, engage, engage.
This can’t be emphasized enough. While starting out with a standard profile is great and sharing your own posts often is even better, the most successful way insurance agents can reap the benefits of social media is by making real connections with other people, businesses and communities. Follow other people who follow you. Respond to messages and comments on your page. Provide tips or answer questions when you see other people posting things you may have expert knowledge about. The idea is to make sure they see you as a reliable, trustworthy and approachable contact.
3. Discover which platform(s) work best for you.
Not all social platforms are for everyone. While Facebook has the largest number of users overall, you should consider other aspects that might work better for your region, your clientele or your personal preference. LinkedIn, for instance, is largely career and business oriented. Consider how you can best reach your ideal customers through the platform they would most likely use regularly.
4. Be a teacher.
Some of the most successful insurance agents are not only the ones who know what to say to close a sale, but also the ones who know how to educate their audience in an approachable way. Consider providing tips or answers to commonly asked questions once a week, but allow others to provide feedback as well. The more engagement you have, the more likely other people will see it on their feeds and want to begin following you.
5. Ask others to write a review, to share your profile or to repost your Tweets or status updates.
Utilize the connections you already have. While you may not think you know many people, you might be surprised how many of them might be willing to help connect you to others they know.
